What is Obedience Training Anyways?
Obedience Training commonly refers to the training of a dog. This training ranges from very basic commands such as teaching your pooch to reliably respond to sit, down, come and stay. The advanced Obedience Training includes teaching a dog to respond to attack, bark and bite. For a dog to be considered obedient rather than simply trained in obedience, it must respond reliably each time it's handler gives a command.
So why Obedience Training?
Obedience Training is not only helpful to dog owners but also very helpful to dogs. Here are some of the reasons why dogs need to be taught some basic obedience training:
- Build a Positive Relationship
- Teach Life Skills
- Avoid Bad Habits
- Increase Sociability
- Loyalty and Companionship
Here are the Top 3 Obedience Training for your dogs:
Sit
Well, if you want to start from the very basic, I would really recommend this basic command. Besides, this is one of the easiest and fastest command to teach your dog. Just abide these steps very carefully:
- Pick a dog treat that gets your dog jumping around and hold it near his nose
- Slowly move your hand up, causing his head to rise and back to lower.
- Once he sits down, toss him the treat while saying "SIT" clearly.
Just repeat these steps frequently until he has it fully mastered that you don't need the treat to get him seated. There you go, wasn't that simple.
Come
This command can literally save a dog's life. Just imagine your dog running to the streets while ignoring your "come" command and getting ran over by a car. Now that is something you can't imagine right. To get your dog to master this command, just follow these steps:
- Check if you have a collar and leash on your dog
- Squat down to his height and say, "COME" at the same time gently pulling on the leash.
- When he responds and gets to you, hand him a treat with affection.
Practice this command in a safe enclosed area once he has mastered the command with the leash.
Stay
You might want your pooch to fully master the "SIT" command before proceeding to this command.
- Have your dog seated.
- Now put up the halt sign on your hand in front of you, and say "STAY" clearly.
- Slowly take a few steps back and reward him with a treat with affection if he stays.
- Over the time, stand back further before tossing him the treats.
This command requires a lot of patience as it takes quite a while to master it. After all, dogs were not meant to stay put in one place only, so we're basically going against nature for the good of they're safety.
