What are fleas?
Fleas are tiny flightless insects that are commonly referred to as parasites. As external parasites, they survive by consuming blood of their host. Now, isn't that pathetic. Adult fleas can grow up to about 3 mm long and are usually brown in colour. Fleas can leap distances up to 50 times their body length. (What a fascinating yet annoying creature).
Why Battle Fleas?
Have you ever noticed your pooch scratch vigorously on one spot for hours, well that might just be the work of a flea. When flea sucks blood from your dog, it leaves behind spots of where it's needle was injected, causing an itchy situation for your dog. So what, it's just scratching. NO you're WRONG, excessive scratching can lead to visible patches of hair loss and reddened, irritated skin. Besides, fleas pose a bigger threat when they are able to transmit parasites such as tapeworms to your dog. Tapeworms are the last thing you want in your dog, trust me.
So how exactly do you Battle Fleas?
These 3 natural remedies that I used below are the most helpful in preventing fleas on your furry friend.
Salt
Salt is a great dehydration agent which helps to get rid of adult fleas. It can be found in almost any grocery stalls near you. I would recommend a warm and soothing salt bath for your doggie. Take note that it would be better if you did this treatment after your dog's bath.
- Fill up your dog's bath tub with warm water just enough to fully rinse him up.
- For one gallon of water, add 1 tablespoon of salt into the tub of water.
- Seat your doggie into the tub and rinse him of with the salt water.
- Let him soak in there for about 10 minutes.
- Wash him of with fresh water after his salt soak.
- Dry him up and toss him some treats to reward his cooperation.
You can do this treatment after his baths. weekly or once a fortnight. However, if your dog has a skin problem or injuries, you can do this twice a day. Just make sure you avoid salt water contact on his face.
Vinegar
Vinegar is an acidic substance used mostly in Asian cuisines, but, we're gonna be using this as a quick and effective treatment for your dog today. Vinegar has the ability to kill fleas, either adult or young, thanks to it's high acidic content that seem to be an uncomfortable living space for fleas.
- Dilute vinegar with water and store in a spray bottle.
- Dry off your dog completely.
- Using an absorbent cloth, wipe your dog with the diluted vinegar following his fur direction.
- Once you've wiped your dog, let him dry of without wiping him down.
- Repeat after every baths.
This is one of the best way to kill fleas on your dogs. Remember, this treatment requires patience and affection towards your pooch.
Turmeric
This is a golden paste that is usually used in Tamil cooking. It originated from Tamilnadu, India. This treatment is the most effective but may leave some yellow stains on your dog's coat.
- Mix some turmeric powder with water until a thick mixture is formed. Store in a container, ready for use.
- Apply the paste on your dog's hot spots and fleas. Let it soak for a bit and wash him of.
- Dry him up and reward him some treats.
You can repeat this treatment as frequent as you want to as there is no side effects that are associated with this paste.
